1961 VW Splitscreen Kombi Takes Home Car Gods 54 People's Choice Award at Castle Howard
Tom Pollard from Yorkshire was the proud winner of the Car Gods 54 People’s Choice Award winner at the Castle Howard Father’s Day Classic Car and Motorcycle Show. His 1961 Volkswagen Splitscreen Kombi took home the spoils, gathering the most votes on a stunning Father’s Day event.
Tom’s example hails from Brazil, where VW had started building vehicles in the 1950’s, and only stopped a few years ago. This is therefore a rare early example, the split screen windscreen and 11 windows some of its unique features.
“I imported [it] from Belgium where it had been shipped to last year from Brazil, while waiting for someone to buy it. I picked it up from the docks at Hull last year, and have spent the time since converting it into a campervan, by transforming the interior from its kombi layout into a period but modern designed layout. I have also swapped the original 1200cc engine for a slightly more powerful 1500cc unit to help with hill climbing! She has been named ‘humbug’ by the family, and is much cherished already, slotting nicely into our VW collection, which also features a 1972 Beetle and Karmann Ghia.
Congratulations once again to Tom on his victory and we wish him many happy holidaying trips in the future.
